Hurricane Harvey Relief
How NAAFA Members Can Help Hurricane Harvey Victims

Whenever there is a natural disaster the magnitude of Hurricane Harvey, one thing that is always desperately needed is plus-size clothing and NAAFA members from all over the country always step up to help those in need. NAAFA board members felt it was important to put together this special edition newsletter that would provide you with information on various ways that you can help.

Besides food, shelter, money and clothing, victims are in need of things like general first aid products, personal/travel sized hand sanitizer, pocket-size tissue, over-the-counter allergy medication and pain relief meds like Tylenol or Advil, feminine hygiene products, lip balm, sun screen/lotion, new un-opened socks, new un-opened underwear, toiletries and so much more.

Please check out the articles included here for specific ways to help and where to ship your donations.

Where to Send Plus-Size Clothing

Many of you wonderful people have already reached out to NAAFA to see where you can send plus-size clothing to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey. Whenever a disaster such as this happens, there is always a call for plus-size clothing so we have reached out to allies in Texas who can help coordinate our efforts.

We have made arrangements with Dawn McDowell Brooks who lives near the disaster area to receive boxes of clothing and then to make sure they get to the people who need them. If you have clean gently used or new plus-size clothing that you would like to donate to the victims of Hurricane Harvey, send those to:

Dawn McDowell Brooks
17513 Kessler Dr.
Pflugerville, TX 78660

There are special requests for plus women’s clothing of all sizes, maternity clothing size large and up, men’s 44-54 waist pants, men’s 3XL and up shirts and new un-opened underwear.

FedEx has pledged $1,000,000 to help with disaster relief so you might want to consider supporting them by shipping your packages FedEx.

What to Consider when Donating Money
Hurrican Harvey Relief

Many organizations ask for your money to assist in disaster relief, but sadly, many of these organizations use so much of your money for their overhead that very little, if any, get to those in need. We would encourage you to consider the Houston charities that have been proven to be efficient in spending the money you donate.

Houston Food Bank (http://www.houstonfoodbank.org/) scores at the top of the list among charities in the Houston area: https://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=5673

Tied for the top spot of charities that keep their overhead down and use their funds to support their programs in Houston is Memorial Assistance Ministries (https://www.maministries.org/) which works to help families have the means to meet their basic needs: https://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=13892

Fifty four of Houston's 108 largest charities have received a five star rating from Charity Navigator, so before you donate your hard earned cash, consider donating to one of these 54 organizations that will respect your donation: https://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?FromRec=1&bay=search.metro&metroid=2&linkback=1&sortby=rtg

We Can’t Forget our Animal Friends

When one is scrambling to save their life or the life of their children, sadly the pets and farm animals may be left behind. The Houston area has very highly rated charities that are well poised to help rescue animals during this horrific flood.

Charity Navigator recommends that you may want to consider donating to one or all of three animal charities in the area:

Houston SPCA has a five star rating (http://www.houstonspca.org/) and is equipped to rescue large as well as small animals.

Houston Humane Society (http://www.houstonhumane.org/) and San Antonio Humane Society (https://sahumane.org/) are both working with the rescue efforts and are three star rated charities.

These highly-rated organizations are located in the most-affected areas and are providing support to individuals and animals.

Founded in 1969, NAAFA, the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance, is a non-profit human rights organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for fat people. NAAFA works to eliminate discrimination based on body size and provide fat people with the tools for self-empowerment through public education, advocacy, and member support.
